Japanese is not that difficult to learn and you can become confident in basic conversational Japanese in a matter of 8-10 weeks if you have a good course to follow.

The Japanese language is very consistent and doesn't have confusing silent letters and changing vowels sounds like English, so be encouraged!

Below I have outlined the best approach for learning to speak Japanese. The first thing to note is there is a huge amount of growth in online courses thanks to the Internet these days. 1000's of people are turning to easy downloaded courses over traditional methods of learning. I have looked at 17 online Japanese courses and have found Rocket Japanese to be the best, you can check ou their website here: Rocket Japanese

Let's Get Started...

Ok, so learning to speak Japanese is a great thing to do, because it can open up many opportunities for you, including job offers, new friends, relationships and it makes travelling a lot more fun! The Japanese love it when they meet people that can speak their language, even if only the basics.

The best way to take Japanese lessons is through a combination of listening, watching and doing. This is very important and something to consider carefully when choosing the best approach for you or your children.

Once you have got a handle on basic Japanese I can't stress enough how important it is to put what you learn into practice. I have outlined some ways to do this for you on page 2.

By the way if you choose to limit your learning to one of the avenues I mentioned, for example only through reading, you will find that you will learn a lot more slowly and the chances of giving up increases, especially with children, so keep that in mind.

Below I have listed some great ways that you can learn Japanese:

Learning Japanese Online

With out doubt the best way is to learn Japanese online (sponsored affiliate links). The simple reason is that nowadays there are some great products available on the internet, and they can be downloaded straight to your computer so that you can learn at your own time and on your own conditions.

Also because there are no shipping fees, classroom rent or teachers salaries the courses are a lot cheaper. When choosing a product make sure it has audio and text so that you can listen and watch.

The best online courses will encourage you to practice along with them too.

You might be wondering how am I going to know what to look for?

Japanese Language School

You can look up a Japanese language course in your local area at a language college or school. Keep in mind that you may have to be flexible if you work during the day and attend an evening course.

Make sure also that you ask what credentials the teacher has before you pay for the course, because the last thing you want to do is learn Japanese badly.

Regardless this can be a great way to learn. The advantage of this approach is that you can practice what you learn with other classmates and this will help your learning and is a great way to meet people too. You also have the added benefit of getting answers to questions straight away.

Depending on where you live you should be able to find a good Japanese class pretty easily, just do a Google search for your local area.

However keep in mind that the downfall of learning to speak Japanese in a class, and it is rather a big one is that it's not very convenient. If you work during the day or have kids to care for it can be difficult to attend a course.

Not to mention this is the most expensive way I have come across too, with course fees and travel involved. In addition to this your pace of learning can be somewhat restricted to that of the majority of the class.

Travel To Japan

You can of course, if you are brave enough, travel to Japan and throw yourself in the deep end as a way of learning to speak Japanese too. I do know people that have been successful doing this, and although it can actually be quite quick it is also very tough and embarrassing. It involves a lot of smiling and pointing.

A tip for you to keep in mind if you go to Japan is, if you live in the big cities like Tokyo and Osaka, you will be less likely to learn Japanese quickly as it is very easy to get by with English and get distracted by the big city. Where as if you head out of the cities you will find that you NEED to speak Japanese to get by, and you WILL pick up the language faster.

I tried talking to a Japanese person once armed with few words, no lessons and no clue really, and by the look on the person's face you would have though I'd said "Hi I'm a giant Jellybean and this is my blue dog!..." not that much fun.

Once you have started your Japanese lessons through a course like Rocket Japanese, going to Japan for a holiday or work is a lot easier and a great way to improve you skills.
