Counting in Japanese Continued...

Now that you have learned the cardinal numbers, I am going to teach you what we call 'Ordinal Numbers' which are 1st, 2nd, 3rd... and after this I will teach you how to count numbers of people and objects also.

Ordinal Numbers:

1st Ichi-ban
2nd Ni-ban
3rd Sam-ban
4th Yom-ban
5th Go-ban
6th Roku-ban
7th Nana-ban
8th Hachi-ban
9th Kyuu-ban
10th Juu-ban

Well done!! Now lets look at counting objects. Please note that you do not need to add the word for 1,2,3..etc..before the counter as the word itself already indicates the number. For example if I were counting 2 Coffee's I would not say ni futa-tsu koohii but would simply say futa-tsu koohii.

If you want learn fluent Japanese and feel confident with all counters etc... you may want to check out our reviews of the best Online Course here: Learn Japanese

1 Hi-to-tsu
2 Fu-ta-tsu
3 Mit-tsu
4 Yot-tsu
5 I-tsu-tsu
6 Mut-tsu
7 Na-na-tsu
8 Yat-tsu
9 Ko-ko-no-tsu
10 Too

When we are considering the amount of people when counting in Japanese we use the counter "Nin", therefore six people would simply be roku-nin and so on.
