  • First make sure it is a TRUE online course. This may sound rather obvious, but some courses I came across advertise themselves as very convenient learn from home courses online, but then you find out that you have to pay for shipping of a box CD's and some text books!!
  • When you are choosing a course to get the best results with learning Japanese then you need to involve as many learning stimuli as you can, such as audio, visual and interaction.

By this I mean the use of visual aids with images and pictures, audio of native Japanese speakers so you get the right pronunciation and also interactivity in the form of quizzes, games and test etc...

You see online Japanese courses that are truly professional and clever do this, as they have researched what helps people grasp a language quickly and easily and maximises the chances of people sticking with it, and designed their courses for this purpose. Rocket Japanese being a classic example of this done very well.

  • Finally I want to stress this last point too; the biggest limitation you need to be aware of if you want to learn Japanese Online is that you obviously don't have the luxury of having a teacher right there to ask questions when you get stuck.

However some online courses have realised this and have 24hr support via email, so you can email question to their teachers. Not many courses do this unfortunately so it is worth looking into, because this will be something that you are going to need. Let's be honest if you start learning Japanese and don't have questions then I would be amazed.

  • The other huge advantage of choosing to learn Japanese online is that because you do not have to pay for shipping as its all electronic the course prices are drastically lower than traditional methods of learning a language, well atleast they should be.

Don't go paying anything more than about $100 because you simply do not need to, and are probably getting taken for a ride if you do. Rocket Japanese is currently going for $99 and this is the benchmark course that other people are trying to copy.

The reason I think Rocket Japanese is the best choice to learn Japanese Online with is because it ticks all the boxes of what a good Internet Language course should have. It has audio, images, pictures, software games, 24 hr support (and a learners forum) and it is not over priced like some products that I looked that were trying to charge $500!!
